Review: Darren Hayes Too Close For Comfort DVD
Posted Tuesday, November 14 2006
I had a fairly good idea of the man behind the music before I watched his latest tell-all DVD release, but the release does bring with it some home truths about the ex-Savage Garden front man including life, music and his relationship with life on the road.
He doesn't hide behind "celebrity" with this DVD, rather you see a vulnerable man who shares his hopes and his fears ever since the split of Savage Garden in 2002.
Hayes narrates each segment of the documentary DVD that goes behind the "public" Darren Hayes.
This DVD was filmed during a pivotal time of his life. It was his first solo tour after leaving Australia's most successful pop export, Savage Garden – also a part of his life that Hayes shares on the 134-minute doco. With promises from his US label for a Grammy award and number one hit solo album, Hayes reflects on his disappointments.
Whilst we've heard the stories, we hear Darren's side of the infamous Savage Garden split and unearths his, then, concerns at such a peak time of the singer's career.
Hayes generally leads a very private life but lets his guard down on this DVD showing his personality on stage but even more interesting... offstage. His offstage personality is one like no one has seen… from prank calls to altercations with waitresses, Hayes also puts a whole new meaning to 'Break Me Shake Me' with his on tour hyperactive antics.
Directed by Grant Marshall, the film is unique in it's approach. Not just a typical concert film - 'Too Close' features a radical approach to the presentation of the performance. It comprises footage from each and every night of his 7 month world tour.
Too Close For Comfort is a candid, funny and sometimes painfully honest account of this journey… in stores now.
