This Delicate Thing We've Made
DARREN HAYES
Producer(s): Darren Hayes, Justin Shave
Genre: POP
Label: Powdered Sugar

Darren Hayes' double-disc "This Delicate Thing We've Made" is a momentous spiritual tour de force, an undressed lyrical exploration of a soul reborn, tucked into a labyrinth of sonic textures. After publicly coming out and revealing details of a tumultuous childhood, Hayes shears the velvet veneer of hits like "Truly Madly Deeply," often conjuring frenetic, nervous dance beats and such telling titles as "A Fear of Falling Under" and "A Conversation With God." But all is not dark: Melodic moxie springs forth via "The Sun Is Always Blinding Me" and "Listen All You People," as plush ballads "Maybe" and "Words" further soften spiked edges. Fans have the clear choice to simply sing along to the surface or look beyond the beats to see inside a man in his 30s who has triumphed in a tug of war with demons. - Chuck Taylor
