HE shot his new music video with Hollywood bitch Janice Dickinson and met his idol Madonna at a London dinner party, where she admitted to being a fan.
But Darren Hayes was still surprised to get the celebrity welcome when arriving home in Australia yesterday.
The singer and husband Richard Cullen jetted in to Sydney, ahead of his 14-day promotional tour and - much to their amusement - was met by Confidential's cameras.
While the happy couple still act like newlyweds, being welcomed "like stars" had them in fits of giggles. "We're really happy, but we were mainly laughing at getting the paparazzi treatment. We thought it was funny - it's just us," Hayes told Confidential from his Sydney hotel room.
The former Savage Garden frontman says he is more at ease returning with a new album he's proud of - This Delicate Thing We've Made - than playing the superstar.
He'll do his only public performance at Hum Records in Darlinghurst today from 1pm, a low-key approach compared with his stadium-packed Savage Garden days. It's all part of what Hayes calls his low-key "looking back with joy" approach at the moment.
Just don't reminisce about his old muso mate, Daniel Jones.
When asked whether the pair might ever consider a Spice Girls-style reunion the response was abrupt.
"No, never," he says curtly. "I once said I'd only do it if it cured cancer. And that's still how I feel."
