Breaking Up Is Hard To Do
By Ed Nimmervoll

Thanks to Kate (Kateo) for typing up the article and the review and thanks to Kate (Teddy) for the scans!

Under the heading "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" they say "The end of two bands is captured very differently on DVD". The first is about Crowded House's Farewell to the World DVD and the second is about TCFC:

The Savage Garden break-up was private, to be kept under wraps until some appropriate moment. The moment never came as the story leaked and Darren Hayes was painted the villian. There's never been a public farewell or explanation, something Hayes confronts as part of his appropriately named DVD, Too Close For Comfort.

We see Hayes on stage in Europe, but we also see a none-too-complimentary behind the scenes documentary shot during the tour, with Hayes sitting in judgement of himself and his behaviour in a subsequent frank interview. It's not a DVD made to sugar-coat anything for fans. Why did he do it?

"I guess I really made it for myself," he told MAG. "It was a process. Post-Savage Garden I was doing a lot of things because I wanted to keep the momentum going, keep my career going. When I started making the documentary I had no idea what it was I was recording.

"A year afterwards, when I looked back at all the footage I thought, I hate that person. I guess I've released it now because I've seen how the film ends."

Hayes knows he's no longer "that" person. He's married, happy and moving on to the next part of his music career.

"Too Close For Comfort" DVD Review

The little review was marked at 8 out of 10, it goes as follows:

The most intriguing DVD of the year; Darren Hayes, the former Savage Garden frontman, had success, fame, fortune, respect and a big attitude. After the Garden's messy break-up he went solo. On this world tour we see an artist coping, or in this case not coping, with the change in fortune. He is unlikeable. Stick with him. Years later we are introduced to a more mature, at peace Hayes.

They also had this advertisement for the TCFC DVD in this issue...
