This Delicate Thing We've Made
**** (4 stars)
What you need to know...After a two-year absence from the charts, the former Savage Garden warbler is back - with a colossal, 25- track extravaganza!
First impressions...Double albums can test the patience of even the most hardy music lover (yes, Gareth Gates, we haven't forgotten) so Darren's decision to bombard us with a two-CD set admittedly got alarm bells ringing. But - surprisingly - it works! Pop, rock and electro collide to magnificent effect on big, melodramatic tracks such as Waking The Monster, as blast of theatrical campery that sounds like Justin Timberlake possessed by the spirit of Meat Loaf. And the pulsating Listen All You People is an I Will Survive for the 21st Century. There are tender moments, too: the deeply personal How to Build A time Machine sees Darren revisit his troubled childhood and is one of the album's highlights. In fact, if Darren's falsetto vocals float your boat, there's not a lot to dislike here (if thy don't, run for the hills!).
Our favourite track... The uplifting On The Verge Of Something Wonderful.
You'll like this if you like...Justin Timberlake, Scissor Sisters.
Do you know? In June 2006, Darren married his partner, Richard Cullen.
New verdict...There's a lot more to Darren than syrupy ballads.
