Catching up with Savage Garden's Darren Hayes
After coming out and getting married (to British filmmaker Richard Cullen), the 35-year-old former lead singer of Australian group Savage Garden ("Truly Madly Deeply") returns with his third solo album, This Delicate Thing We've Made.
On Coming Out
I was in an airport lounge, and I wrote a blog saying, "I just want my fans to know that I married my boyfriend of two years." And then I got on the plane. I had no idea what the outcome would be. That was last year. I actually came out (in my private life) in 1998. I'd married my college girlfriend, and a year (later) we both realized that we'd made a huge mistake (and) that I was gay.
On Fan Reaction
If anything, it's made me more interesting. One of my biggest worries was that these women who bought my records would think that I had deceived them. On the whole, it hasn't made a difference. Of course there's been the occasional homophobic letter, abut I can count them on one hand.
On His Civil Partnership
We had a ceremony, a really lavish wedding, about a year before we signed the civil partnership agreement (in England). It was initially just a political point to make. . But it has had an impact on how I feel about myself and how we feel about our relationship.
On Helping Gay Youth In The Trevor Project
My coming-out process was a difficult one. There were moments when I was deeply depressed and suicidal. I can say to these kids, "You know, I thought my life was over, and now I'm married, I do what I love for a living. I feel great about myself." I'm living this happily ever after that I didn't think was possible.
