Off the Record... Darren Hayes
After selling more than 25 million albums as one half of Savage Garden, Aussie Darren Hayes' solo career has had its up and downs. But he's back ith a new double album - and a husband! We called to get the scoop...

Hi Darren! How is married life treating you?
It's beautiful. Before I met Richard, I was quite dramatic about my love life, and I thought I was unmatchable and unloveable, but he completely took me by surprise.

What made you fall for him?
It was his sense of humour more than anything - plus he's a brainiac. He was unaware of my pop career when I met him, so I think there was part of me that wanted to impress him.

Do you want kids?
Absolutely, I'd love to adopt in the next five years or so. I'm not ready to give a child 100 per cent of my attention just yet, but I know I will be one day.

Why didn't you come out as gay earlier?
I was just never really asked about my love life. Coming out for me was intensely private and rather painful. It took me a long time to come to terms with it myself, so the idea of holding a press conference about it didn't feel right.

Did you go through periods when you were depressed?
Totally - I used to hate myself. I was always on the run from a broken family. I had a rough upbringing and I thought fame would fix me. But now I know that you fix yourself.

On to lighter things - who is the most famous person's number in your mobile phone?
Kylie's - but I never call it. I've called her in the past, when she's been going through rough times, but I'm always a bit scared of coming across liek a stalker!

Is Kylie your female crush?
No, that's Madonna. Kylie's soft, but Madonna's a little bit more terrifying.

Have you met Madge?
I have, and she was adorable. She was flirtatious and competitive in one moment - I loved it!

Darren's new single, On The Verge Of Something Wonderful, is out on 6 August. The album, This Delicate Thing We've Made, is released on 20 August.
