Darren Hayes "This Delicate Thing We've Made"

"There's often an impression of Darren Hayes as a pop artist who deals mostly with things at a a mainstream, saccharine level. (After all he named his indie record label Powdered Sugar.) But the truth is the opposite: Hayes's music might be based on his passion for pop and electro-exploration, but often the content goes much deeper, particularly lyrically. In his new double-album release This Delicate Thing We've Made, his riskiest moments are his best: tracks such as Bombs up in my Face, with its feisty biting commentary and the dark energy of Setting Sun. If Hayes had tightened this into a single album, it might have been the best of his career, but there enough piercing moments to make up for an occasional lack of cohesion."

8/10
