Despite being notably private about his relationships – even back in the days when he was the lead singer of Savage Garden and married to a woman in Queensland – Darren Hayes has revealed more details about his new husband, Richard Cullen.
Hayes, who chatted to S last week from London, revealed that Cullen (who married Hayes in a civil ceremony in Britain) is an animator who works with U2 designer Willie Williams. Cullen’s most recent gig was working on design effects for George Michael’s tour.
"The best thing about our relationship, our marriage, is that it was allowed to develop in privacy – I’m so grateful for that," Hayes said. "My opinion about public relationships is that the worst possible example is, say, Jessica Simpson – where you sell the intimacies of your life off."
"With us, people know the date we got married because that’s the day we signed an official piece of paper, but we had our own ceremony on a separate day and it was private."
"I have no problem acknowledging him [publicly] but we’ll probably always be the couple that doesn’t turn up on the red carpet," Hayes said. "He’s an individual aside from me, he’s an artist, he’s my hero and someone I admire and greatly respect. What I love about him is he’s independent from me."
Cullen and Hayes have stepped out to a couple of events together, including the wedding of Elton John and David Furnish. "You know what’s really sweet? We went to his wedding and we were married and no one knew," Hayes said. The singer, who has sold more that 25 million albums worldwide, is currently recording a new release in Britain which is likely to be a double album. After severing ties with Sony BMG earlier this year, Hayes has signed up with another major label (yet to be revealed) ahead of the new release.
