Additional Info From Melissa: When Daniel goes, I've met one of the Daddo brothers he is referring to the famous Daddo family. If you ever watched Models Inc, Cameron Daddo was the photographer. In this case younger brother Lochie was the interviewer. The other Daddo is Andrew and he does Kidspeak.
Lochie: In the beginning SG couldn't get a record deal. Now they are one of Australia's most successful band, Number One in the US and worth $30 million plus. They are about to star in the Olympic Closing Ceremony and I caught up with Darrein and Daniel in LA.
Lochie: Daniel Jones from SG rarely talks to the media but he spoke exclusively to me during their sellout concert at LA's universal amphitheatre. So mate, it's a real pleasure to be sitting here with you because we don't actually see a lot of you in the press.
Dan: Oh no
Lochie: It's cool
Dan: I've met one of the Daddo brothers. (Hysterical laughter)
Lochie: Now you guys have come so far..
Dan: (interrupting) My goals were to sell maybe 100-200 albums coz I didn't do it to sell albums, we didn't do it to make money, we didn't do it to play stadiums, I did it because it came naturally to me and I just wanted to do it. I found a passion in life and I went for it.
Lochie: So what goes through your mind now when you look back on your career and how quickly you guys have risen.
Dan: I wish I had sold only 200 albums. (Laughs hysterically, again)
Darren: Just kinda enjoying the ride a bit more this time. The first record was very (pause) it was too quick and I was too young. I was 18 when I met Daniel and I'm 28 today, so it's now kinda sinking in a little bit.
Dan: It is still overwhelming at times, I mean you do get accustomed to it because you are living in it everyday of your life so it slowly becomes normal to you, but there are times when I wish I could come away for a month and then come back again, but it works and it's business and record companies are like (pulls funny face) come, come, come. Being rich gives you freedom, being famous actually takes that off, so to try and find that balance has been the best thing about it.
Lochie: Have you found it?
Dan: No, not yet, but I'm planning to even up the scales a little bit.
Lochie: Darren now lives in San Francisco, but Daniel remains in Brisbane so what does this mean for SG?
Darren: You know I probably think we work best apart - we are very different people and I have to give it to Daniel that he gives me a lot of freedom in terms of where the story is going to go. You know, I put my lyrics all over it and get to get up on stage and make him wear ridiculous outfits.
Lochie: So it's your idea (both laugh)
Darren: He gives me a lot of leeway in terms of that and I guess we both do what the other one doesn't do. In terms of the elements of creating a song some of the best songs we've written have been written in the studio very spontaneously, but a lot of Affirmation was written with him just sending me a track and then I would record a rough demo of the song, send it back and just kinda wait and say what do you think. A lot of it was kinds dark, a lot of it was very, very personal and he was just like cool and we were anticipating each other very well and I don't know maybe that comes from way too many economy flights from America from Sydney - a lot of time to sit with each other. (Laughs)
Lochie: You're performing at the closing ceremony of the Olympics...
Dan: Are we allowed to say that?
Lochie: yeah, I've read it in the paper
Dan: We've signed a confidentiality agreement, but we are doing a thing called the big O in Sydney. (Laughs) Um, yeah, that's gonna be exciting because it's in Australia, I mean it's all about the athletes and I know that, but it gives us a chance to be able to jump in the back of them and go yeah, let's play to a billion people watching on TV.
Lochie: Let's talk about the ARIA's.
Dan: Yeah, really proud to be actually nominated for best producer. That is, out of any of them I would like to walk away with that one. It's hard not to feel like you are stepping down because we went out with such a bang, I mean we won 10 ARIA's two years ago, now we've been nominated for five, we may win one if we are lucky, so it's sorta like okay, it's all downhill from here. I might start looking for another job. (laughs)
