Ed McMann (interviewer/DJ from Kiss108FM): So you guys came out with "I Want You" a few years ago, and then "Truly Madly Deeply" and "To the Moon and Back", and you became so big that it's amazing. And then you disappeared for a little while. Where have you been?

Darren Hayes: We're making a new record.

Ed McMann: At what stage are you in?

Darren Hayes: Actually, we just quickly recorded "The Animal Song," which will be on the record ... but I guess that song's an in-between thing for us because I'm five days away from going to San Francisco to record the record. I've been in New York for about six months, writing songs and they're all together. We're just about to go and put them to tape.

Ed McMann: How did you end up getting hooked up with the little soundtrack project?

Darren Hayes: We were on tour last year, and Gary Marshall invited us to see a test screening of this film called "The Other Sister," and we fell in love with it. We knew it wasn't going to be an "Armaggeddon" or anything *Ed laughs*, but it was a chance for you to release some music outside of this whole concert and the album. It was a good chance for us to write a song that didn't have anything to do with our band. It's really a song written specifically for the film, so it was fun.

Ed McMann: But you did decide to put it on the new album?

Darren Hayes: Yeah, basically. It's our first chance to work with producer Walter Afanasieff. That's a mouthful, let me tell you.

Ed McMann: Yeah, he's like a genius!

Darren Hayes: He is amazing, and I love the sound of that record, and I want it to be on there. There's about sixteen or seventeen songs at the moment, but I guess we'll cut that down to about twelve, but I'm sure "The Animal Song" will make it on there.

Ed McMann: Yeah, the first album is just ... super power-packed pop, hit after hit. How does this album compare?

Darren Hayes: *laughs* Oh, it's exactly the same!

*both Ed and Darren laugh*

Ed McMann: I know! I mean, are you going in a different direction at all, or are you going with the hits?

Darren Hayes: You know, the first time around we had no idea if we'd sell one copy or one million. We were just two kids from Brisbane, Australia, a town that on one's ever heard of, and we wrote songs that we liked. And they sold eleven million copies or something ... We did the same thing this time. We sat down for six months and kept writing music we liked, and we'll see what happens. I think if you put your heart and soul into something, there's a fair chance it will succeed, but who knows?

Ed McMann: We hope you bring it on the road and play this summer.

Darren Hayes: We would love to, actually. Our American tour was some of the best memories we've had from this whole ride, so yeah. Absolutely.

Ed McMann: Are you going to have it wrapped in time to tour for the summer?

Darren Hayes: I don't think so. We'll probably have it out in August or September, and we might just do some festivals and radio shows and do the whole promotion thing for a while just to warm up with our band. I imagine January in 2000 ... God, that sounds scary *Ed laughs again*, but that's probably when we'll kick off an actual tour Down Under and then bring it up through the States in your summer of that year.
