John Garabedian: Hello?

Darren Hayes: John, How are you doing?

John Garabedian: : Is this the Darren Hayes in the ambulance?

Darren: This is..(laughs) I'm actually sitting outside the doctor's office, about to go in, but I'm feeling better today actually.

John Garabedian: Are you really at the doctor's office?

Darren: I really am! 3 days ago I got this weird flu that I think is taking the whole nation by storm and...yeah but I'm getting better.

John Garabedian: I saw you on Jay Leno the other night and you looked like it was...you really could tell that you were not feeling well.

Darren: (laughs) Thank you for saying that!

John Garabedian: (laughs) No, you were great! But you looked like...

Darren: It's funny...I got onto the internet and some of the kids I think described me as looking like a train wreck....which I thought that was funny but I literally had to be injected with steroids to take the inflammation in my throat down just so that I could make a sound. But I'm doing everything I can to be well for the American Music Awards. I'm gonna be fine.

John Garabedian: So you ought to be feeling very good. You have the number one song in America this week.

Darren: Oh, I'm thrilled. It's amazing actually. You know, I personally...I kinda didn't expect it. You know, I think that we worked really, really hard on the second album and we thought...we had been away for a long time and so it might..it might take a little bit more effort than that for people to sort of embrace us but it's been wonderful. And you know, we are getting ready to tour and everything. You know, this is the first single from the new record and you know we start in April in Japan and I think we'll be in America in the summer but it's looking like a lot of fun.

John Garabedian: You know, Truly Madly Deeply, when you look at all the music research that we look at all the time, and you know they tests songs to see how many people like them, and Truly Madly Deeply is one of the best testing songs of all time. And when I heard "I Knew I Loved You", I thought to myself, this is like another one of those ballads that people just get to love.

Darren: Well, I appreciate that. It's funny, because you know I think that some of our best songs are very simple and you know I was talking to one of my friends today, just about music in general and about how I think people really are admitting that you can respond to melody. You know, you could be a fan of the Backstreet Boys and you can admit that...that's cool because the songs are so .. they're good. You know I defy anyone to sorta not be able to hum these songs. It's because they are just... you know.. good melodies and I appreciate you saying that.

John Garabedian: Well, you do such a good job of singing on that song and just the thought of I Knew I Loved You before I met you is like so many people who've been in love and you meet someone and you just say, you know I know who this person is.

Darren: Yeah, I have that feeling. I really believe that feeling. I'm a bit of a fan of destiny in some ways. My manager says when he listens to this song he thinks about the first time that he saw his baby, his daughter, you know.....He thinks that's what he felt when he looked at his child for the first time. I think that a lot of people relate to this song in many different ways and that's a good feeling.

John Garabedian: He's probably thinking of his bank account.

Darren: Maybe (they laugh) No, we met his daughter the other day and she's adorable.

John Garabedian: That's very nice...so was there any special person that you were thinking of or any relationship you had when....

Darren: You know there wasn't, because the funny thing is when I wrote Truly I was absolutely madly in love and thinking about, you know the person I was singing it about and a lot of this new record ...it's a bit more personal...and it's ah well it's very personal actually and I had sort of you know I had come out of a relationship and I think I was writing this song in terms of dreaming about falling in love again. And I remember seeing an interview on TV with Oprah Winfrey and Prince and he was talking about his wife and he said that he really felt like he prayed for her and that God answered his prayers and you know he was 20 I think and he wanted a soul mate and when he turned 40 he met this 20 year old and they got married and he really believed that he dreamed her into life. And that struck a cord in me and I remember writing this love song just about one of the most beautiful love stories I had ever heard.

John Garabedian: Wow, isn't that great?

Darren: yeah

John Garabedian: Let's play "I Knew I Loved You" Darren Hayes.

Darren: That's good. Thanks John.

John Garabedian: Thank you for a great song and it was great talking to you again.

Darren: See you next time.

John Garabedian: Look forward to it.

Darren: Bye
