The man of the moment, Darren Hayes, dropped in for a chat with Schooly about his new single ‘Insatiable’, his new album and his plans to eat his underwear if he doesn’t perform at Party in the Park!

Schooly: Welcome and good evening to the show Mr. Darren Hayes. How are you sir?

Darren: I’m good, thanks for having me. I’ve heard a lot about this show.

Schooly: We try our best on this show to let people know what the real deal is and it seems like you are the real deal at the moment.

Darren: What can I say? I’m still blushing – you can’t see that on the radio but I’m red!

Schooly: You've got your new album out, your single's causing havoc. So from your perspective, since Savage Garden, what is Darren Hayes all about?

Darren: You know what's interesting to me, this solo album just feels like my third album. You know I'm very, very proud of Savage Garden, it was just two albums but it was an incredible rollercoaster. And to me I just feel like I'm slowly working out the kind of music that I want to make. It just feels like a natural progression, I'm very excited about it. I can tell you that.

Schooly: Would you say it's very different to Savage Garden - because you basically wrote most of the songs for the group as it was before so...?

Darren: Well, Daniel and I wrote everything together within Savage Garden and I think within a band there's always a healthy compromise. I had much more of an R’n’B, electronic kind of history and so for me making this solo record, I think that's the biggest difference. You can tell that I grew up loving Prince and Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder. You probably can't tell that too much from 'Insatiable', it's a pretty gentle introduction to the album but it's all there.

Schooly: So let's talk about 'Insatiable'. I'll be blatantly honest with you. The first time I heard that record I wanted to go home and have sex. That's how the record hit me. Whoa! That was a very very strong record! How do you make a song that powerful?

Darren: Well, that's a big compliments there so thank you. The way I write songs is like the way people dance in a club. You know when a DJ puts a record on and you start to move and you don't really know why, you just instinctively move - that's what happens to me whenever I hear a melody. Like someone just has to play a chord and then I can hear a song in my head and a lot of this record does get a bit saucy but it's not like I'm trying to be sexual. I think that there's a lot of sex in the rhythms and the bass lines and the fact that it's the first time that I've really been able to explore that side of myself musically.

Schooly: So what came first the music or the lyrics?

Darren: Lyrics are always last. With me it's usually melody that comes first. I'll start off with the tune. Sometimes I'll be at the mic on the final day and I'm still scribbling out words and lyrics and making sure that the words represent what the music feels like.

Schooly: Without further ado, lets's play Insatiable

[Plays Insatiable]

Schooly: 95.8 Capital FM London...It's the song that driving everybody crazy. It's one of my favorites of the year as well. I think..to be honest with you. Here's another fact for you. On the show we have awarded that song the sexiest record of 2002 already.

Darren: I love this show! I love it! (Schooly laughs)

Schooly: It is! We had Enrique Iglesias. We thought that was kinda sexy but then along came this song and it's just a very, very sexy song so we just wanted to award you and give you that accolade definitely for that record.

Darren: It was difficult explaining it to my mother. Because she phoned me up and she said "what are the words to that song?" And I had to say...(Darren mumbles some of the lyrics..."turn the lights.. want a taste every..um nothing..you know Mum..I'm going to send you an album, there is lyrics and you can check it out." (they are both laughing)

Schooly: So listen, you have to promise us that you'll join us on the show again because we need to still talk about the album...I had the album for a few days and I've listened to it over and over again. I've picked out quite a little few points that we need to kinda go through on that.

Darren: Let's do it

Schooly: So we'll do that..But before that we're going to play one of your favorite songs at the moment.

Darren: Well, it's not an R&B song but I can't get it out of my head, and it isn't Kylie surprisingly enough, it's the new song from Alanis Morissette, I love it.

[Plays Alanis Morissette's song]

Schooly: Alanis Morissette, and Hands Clean chosen by our very special guest on the night school tonight on 95.8 Capital FM London..It's Darren Hayes.

Schooly: So what's next Darren?

Darren: Lots and lots of promo but I am coming back to hopefully do some smaller shows. I really want to do an arena tour with this record but I don't want to rush it. I think this year I'm gonna come back - we keep throwing months around - but it could be August, September, October or something when I'll come around and play your neighbourhood with a small show.

Schooly: Will you come back and do our living room again? Because it was a very intimate occasion wasn't it? Did you enjoy performing live?

Darren: I love it any time I get to perform live. It's definitely one of my strongest points to be honest. I have difficulty being the celebrity but when it comes to singing and performing that's definitely my bag.

Schooly: Do you see yourself as a celebrity?

Darren: I wish I was! I have record company people going 'Say yes!'. But no, not really.

Schooly: Well I can show you my inbox and I can show you all of the emails that we get...

Darren: I think people know who I am but it's weird, I don't really act like it. I went to this very toffy restaurant in London and I never go to the fancy restaurants. I went there and I was so embarassed because my name wasn't on the list to get in. I was in front of all my friends going 'Well my name's Darren Hayes' and I'm from...". It was so embarrassing but I don't work it so maybe I need to start working it.

Schooly: Now here’s a question we all want to know the answer to…every year we have a big get together and go to our local park down the road – it’s called Party In The Park.

Darren: Are you inviting me to Party In The Park?

Schooly: Would you like to perform at Party in the Park?

Darren: You’re inviting me?

Schooly: I am. The pleasure would be all ours.

Darren: I am there! I’m so there. Change my itinerary, get the palm-pilot out…I’ll be at Party In The Park. I’d love to come.

Schooly: Now I think there has just been a massive cheer all over London for you! So that’s an 100% confirmation that you'll be there?

Darren: I’ll be there and if I’m not there you can have my underwear! Savage Garden played there a couple of years ago and it was amazing. The crowd – my God, I’ve never experienced anything like that!

Schooly: Don’t forget, you can watch Darren’s live performance in Capital FM Living Room online on Monday 18th, Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th March between 6pm and 8pm. Don’t miss it!
