(this is how their website advertised the interview) The Insatiable Darren Hayes
Darren Hayes called up the studio from Australia to tell Rachael Hopper what he’d been up to, how he feels about the success of his new single and album, and plans for the near future…
[Plays Insatiable]
Rachael Hopper: Darren Hayes' Insatiable. You're with Capital 95.8, this is Rachael in for Schooly this morning. I'm trying my very best not to talk over the end of that too much because on the phone, live now from Australia, is the man himself, Darren Hayes. Hello.
Darren Hayes: How are you?
Rachael Hopper: I'm fine thank you. I was just saying to you earlier, just a few minutes ago - that must be so weird, listening to your own song down the phoneline from Capital when you're in Australia!
Darren Hayes: I have to tell the listeners that the real answer is, that I said to you - "it's kinda cool actually", I'm dancing around my hotel room.
Rachael Hopper: [Laughs] Fantastic! The song has done phenomenally here Darren and we've been playing your live version quite a lot that you did when you came in and did the err Capital Living Room recently.
Darren Hayes: Y'know honestly, I'm just so amazed at the reaction in the UK, I'm so, honestly I could not be more thrilled, it's such a wonderful warm response and I just can't wait to get back over there.
Rachael Hopper: Ahh, when are you back? When are you coming back to London?
Darren Hayes: Y'know, actually in about a week I'm coming back for three weeks of European promo and lots of stuff, I think we're trying to do all the usual suspects of television performances and so on, um, y'know it's gonna be great.
Rachael Hopper: Oh, that's great! So are you in Australia for work now or...you're not based in Australia at the moment are you?
Darren Hayes: No I live in San Francisco and I've been here and...gosh I'm working hard, it's unbelievable, I mean I just err...y'know what? I turn 30 this year. I just had a premature birthday party because I'm so busy to schedule my birthday...So we had that the other day and um, I shot a new video and um, basically I've just been doing a lot of performances and showcases and the point I'm making is that I did an instore appearance today. For three hours I signed autographs and I thought "I'm getting old" [laughs].
Rachael Hopper: [Laughs] Because it's starting to get to you and you're tired?
Darren Hayes: Absolutely. It exhausted me, I loved it, everybody was so beautiful to me...but I'm sitting here in my bathrobe now just going "I am dead, I need to go to bed."
Rachael Hopper: What time is it? So it's about, what, early evening?
Darren Hayes: It's only 7.30 in the evening here!
Rachael Hopper: Oh so you're not gonna to go out and paint the town then tonight, just room service and chilling?
Darren Hayes: Y'know the problem is I think I did that 2 days ago in Sydney. I had a blast, umm I'm now paying the price for it, but I'm having such a good time with this music, and really meeting a lot of the people that are connecting with this, y'know with this record, it's just been so wonderful.
Rachael Hopper: That's so cool. Now, of course, not only has the single done well here, but of course, the album today's going to go into the chart, which is one of the reasons we've bothered you in the early evening, when you'd rather be sat in your bathrobe. Um, it looks like it's going to go top three...
Darren Hayes: I know. I mean, it's so funny! I cannot believe it and someone called when the midweeks came in and at that point, it was hitting at number one and it'd been sort of neck and neck with Celine Dion.
Rachael Hopper: I know, it's you versus her...
Darren Hayes: I did think about spreading a rumour about Celine but just y'know to kinda compete...but I love her, she's such a beautiful person.
Rachael Hopper: She's cool.
Darren Hayes: We'll let Celine win...
Rachael Hopper: Yeh, well, you never know, it could go either way.
Darren Hayes: It could, look, y'know, I expected it to come in maybe in the top 30, so it's absolutely blown me away...
Rachael Hopper: Absolutely. Too right. Now from the album of course, the next single you're going to release here is going to be Crush isn't it?
1980 ME...
Darren Hayes: Actually, I don't know...I think it's going to be a song called Strange Relationship.
Rachael Hopper: Is it?
Darren Hayes: I'm not sure, it could be Crush or it could be Strange. I know in Australia we just shot the video for Strange Relationship...
Rachael Hopper: I tell you what, I'm gonna have to play Crush in a minute because that's the one I've got lined up [laughs]! And that's very much about you and the 80s isn't it?
Darren Hayes: It's my crush on the year 1983...and um, it's so much fun, and actually to be honest, I shoot the video for that next week as well because basically, those two songs are the next two singles from my album so y'know...it's a lot of fun and it's basically it's three minutes of all these references to the eighties...you have to listen carefully cos they're quite rapid...
Rachael Hopper: Absolutely, that's what we're gonna do right now...I tell you what, we'll bung on Strange Relationship a bit later so people can hear that as well and then we've got it both covered, whatever is released next in the UK. Darren, thank you so much, thanks for coming...
Darren Hayes: Thank you...
Rachael Hopper: No problem and hopefully we'll see you when you come back.
Darren Hayes: I will be around.
Rachael Hopper: Y'know the door at Capital is always open.
Darren Hayes: Oh I love that!
Rachael Hopper: Take care mate, have a nice relaxing evening. Thanks very much...and here's the new track...
