Channel 933 Radio Station Interview
San Diego, California
March 20, 2002

(Big thanks to Natalie for typing up this transcript for us!)

(They play parts of IKILY, C&B, and Insatiable.)

AJ: Darren!

Darren: What’s up!

AJ: I don’t know. You man. New album.

Bridette: Yeah.

AJ: Doing your own thing.

Darren: I know.

AJ: Great reviews as well.

Darren: Yeah we were just talking about that before we came on that USA gave it a good review thank god.

AJ: Yeah do ya sweat that a little bit especially since its your first solo effort were you worried bout what the critics would say.

Darren: No not really but its funny ya know you could be sitting on an air plane like I was the other day and I flipped through a magazine and there was like a review and its like aww if it’s a good one it can make your day and if it’s a bad one its like man I didn’t buy that flight from you I didn’t need to sit with this review.

(AJ & Bridette laugh.)

Darren: But generally ya know if they’re good they’re great and if they’re not you just rip it up and throw it in the trash.

AJ: Is it a bit like ah horoscopes where if you read it and it’s good you hope its true and if it’s a bad one ya go I don’t believe in this crap anyway!

Bridette: laughs

Darren: (giggles) Yeah you're right it’s like (does funny voice) they obviously didn’t listen to the record.

(They all laugh)

Darren: Ya know.

AJ: What do ya, what do ya think they go on I mean as an artist as someone who creates art.

Darren: mm hmm.

AJ: how do ya say this is good and this is bad what do you think a critic goes on?

Darren: Well I think that a critic is just um, ya know it’s just you and me. It’s just someone with an opinion um you know sometimes it is fair to say that I don’t think that you know that they’ll listen to one or two tracks and they’ll have a dead line and they just write something and it’s pretty obvious when someone does that cause you can tell they haven’t listened to the whole album.

AJ: mm hmm.

Darren: I mean sometimes people genuinely like it and write it and genuinely they don’t and I think that that’s cool I mean everyone has an opinion.

AJ: Don’t let it get ya too down, ya know I’m… (Cuts him off)

Darren: Nah you know I mean it’s just an indication of what some ya know of what someone thinks and that’s fair enough.

AJ: I’m thinking of all the love songs all the sweet… the, the type of songs you write I don’t imagine you being angry very often.

Darren: Umm I’m passionate…

AJ: laughs

Darren: I am passionate.

AJ: Yeah.

Darren: So you know that can happen, I’m a Taurus so I’m a bull I can be stubborn, um but you know if I get angry its always just about um, I would get frustrated more than angry ya know it’s usually just artistic energy and um me wanting to make sure that I’m giving the best that I can possibly do and, and giving the people the best of me when it comes to ya know, my art or my performance.

AJ: Darren Hayes on AJ’s playhouse right now, was there a piece of you that you didn’t feel was expressed when you were a part of a group when you were in Savage Garden, that you’re getting a chance to put out there now?

Darren: Yeah my left butt cheek it never got, ya know what I mean it just never got any attention.

(They all laugh.)

AJ: They didn’t give it much exposure.

Darren: Umm ya know what I love um my time in you know Savage Garden it was an amazing experience but we sold 20 million of em.

AJ: Wow!

Darren: Got to travel the world and I’m speaking to you today largely because of that ya know um, loved it! But ya know what I’m 30 this year and this album Spin is a solo album its my third album, ya know its very reflective of the music I grew up listening to it has a soul and R&B flavor to it and um that is definitely a side of me that I didn’t think was coming through previously.

AJ: Ah you grew up listening to what?

Darren: Well you know Marvin Gaye, um early Steve Wonder, Michael Jackson…

Bridette: Wow.

Darren: Prince um a lot of stuff that I didn’t choose I was youngest to three kids we didn’t have a lot of money and we had a hand me down record collection from my aunts and uncles and that’s kind of ya know, that and Fleetwood Mac (AJ and B laugh in background) and I’d learn how to hum from listening to those records and that’s how I learned to sing.

AJ: Wow, Darren Hayes on AJ’s playhouse channel 933 you mentioned Marvin Gaye, Prince you’re talking a lot of artist that sing largely about doing it!

Bridette: laughs.

Darren: (mocks AJ) doing it! (Hehe)

AJ: Your, your song Insatiable is kind of a doin’ it ain’t it?

Darren: It’s a doin’ it song but you know what there’s a lot, there’s a lot of spirit in that song I think you’ve, you have to listen for it and, and in the same way that Marvin (Gaye) used to talk about it I think if you’re in love you know if you’re in a relationship and, and you’re into commitment which I am, I mean I’m totally, I don’t care if that’s un cool I’m ya know I’m into monogamy I’m into commitment and, and, and for me there, there is nothing more beautiful than when you’re making love to someone that you are in love with.

Bridette: (totally agrees) Yes and that’s…

Darren: You know and a lot of this record um is about romance its about falling in love there’s a couple of songs in it talking about (makes funny voice) "doin’ it!"

(Bridette and AJ laugh.)

Darren: But ya know it’s um it comes from a place of, of um of ya know a pretty pure intention.

AJ: I, I, I, I, ah yeah and I’m not trying to take that away I’m just, but I’m curious…

Darren: Oh I wish you would. I need the edge.

(Darren & Bridette giggle.)

AJ: Can, can you listen to your own doin’ it song while you are doin’ it? Haha that’s what I wanna know…

Darren: Uh I cant listen to any music while I’m, doin’ it! because I tend to wanna be musical (AJ & B laugh at how he stresses the "doin it" part) about it and you don’t wanna know you just clear that image from your head but you can imagine one two three four and one and two and ya know…

(AJ and Bridette laugh hard.)

Darren: It becomes an aerobics class.

AJ: Yeah I could, I cant sing to save my life but if I could and I wrote a doin’ it song I think I could have it on in the background, I think I could be going damn I sound good!

Darren: You’d be like (sings) let’s get it on ooh baby.

(They laugh.)

AJ: Ah the women of San Diego are safe from that ever happening (Darren laughs) with, with my singing voice that I have ah portrayed on this show ah can you sing for us a little bit live?

Darren: Oh my god uh yeah what do you wanna hear?

AJ: Well, well do you wanna do Insatiable I mean all this doin’ it talk, people are in there office right now driving in their car…

Darren starts to sing he sings for about 10 seconds and my tape cut off here but I missed like one word lol I was fast.

AJ: Cool you don’t usually like to sing live for radio stations do ya?

Darren: Nah but I just did for you guys cause I’ve been rehearsing with my band at the moment I love to sing more than anything in the world and I’ve been rehearsing with this um this band in New York, and um they’re the coolest bunch of people and its been so fun taking this album and almost translating it into another whole experience live.

AJ: Right.

Darren: And um it’s been a lot of fun. (ahhh… if only u could hear how he said this hehe)

AJ: Well we talked about you left butt cheek and uh doin’ it!

(Darren & Bridette laugh)

AJ: and now you’ve sung do ya, do ya, see if cause if I could sing like you I’d be, I sing in the shower and its horrible, ah ya know.

Darren: No I sing in the shower all the time.

AJ: Do ya just, and are you just happy, I mean does it (cuts Darren off like 2 times) ya know like damn I sound good.

Darren: you know what happens I, I gotta tell you it’s a it’s a really simple thing, alright when I was a little kid um I used to think everyone wanted to be on stage.

Bridette: Mm hmm.

Darren: And so I used to sing all the time and no one ever really raised an eyebrow it was just like… ugh! There’s Darren! Shut up! Can we listen to the radio! Can you… shut up! So I was never really treated like I had this um talent or whatever and so for me its such a its just an its like another way of expressing myself and I am always singing and um it just ma happy its just as simple as that and when I do it on stage! I mean sing not do it!

(AJ & Bridette laugh.)

Darren: Umm it just tends to make people happy and I love that.

Bridette: Not jaded by the industry yet! :)

AJ: Nah not at all! Darren Hayes ah on Channel 933 right now on AJ’s playhouse we’ve covered a lot of ground uh but I think uh, uh can I just confess something to you Darren.

Darren: Mm hmm.

AJ: and your record company person and I have conspired against you.

Darren: Cool.

AJ: She kind of implied that if we were really nice and let you talk about your left butt cheek we could get a full on version with your band of Insatiable.

Darren: Aww now you’ve twisted my arm… I would love to do it.

Bridette: giggles.

AJ: Well not that we don’t like the acoustic taste there but…

Darren: We, we uh well this is a full band this is what I would sound like on my tour I mean I been ah hanging out with these guys for a couple of weeks now rehearsing but uh we’re gonna play you a live version of my single Insatiable from the album Spin.

AJ: Here ya go.

They play Insatiable live version with band at the end everyone claps woo and awes and all that good stuff. :)

AJ: San Diego’s hit music channel 933 that is a live version Darren Hayes and his band! And Insatiable!

Darren: There.

AJ: Very nice.

Darren: Pretty smooth thanks for uh hanging out with me.

AJ: laughs

Darren: giggles.

AJ: Can you talk to like one listener all the women in San Diego are calling right now. (Little pause)

Darren: I can talk to anyone you want…

AJ: Channel 933 good morning.

AJ: Ok go ahead and talk to Darren real quick.

Caller: Hi Darren.

Darren: Hey who’s this?

Caller: This is Michelle.

Darren: Where you calling from?

Caller: From here in Chula Vista.

Darren: Cool (like he knows where that’s at lol)

AJ: What, what do you have to say to Darren? (The girl giggles nervously)

Caller: I love you Darren!

(Bridette & AJ laugh.)

Darren: Aww shucks we love you too.

Caller: I'm like, I'm like a really big fan of yours, I have both of your CD's.

Darren: Uh huh…

Caller: And I’m planing on getting the third one.

Darren: Cool.

AJ: Yeah tell her where she can get it at and what it’s called ya know we gotta plug all that stuff Darren.

(Darren laughs a little.)

Darren: The album's called Spin its by Darren Hayes and actually its available everywhere right now…

AJ: That’s right we did a Spin weekend around here on channel 933 that songs blowing up around here so.

Darren: Cool.

AJ: We know all about it and we encourage people to grab… let me see, I’m sure, I wonder if anyone else wants to say (does girls voice) I love you Darren… (Laughs) 933 good morning, did we lose line 3? Good morning…

Guy Caller: Hi good morning (AJ though it would be a girl, so he puts him on hold)

AJ: What was that? We can do that dude if you want, we can do that dude he probably had a question…

Girl Caller: Good morning playhouse.

AJ: Yeah

Caller: Um I just wanted to thank Darren First of all, because my best friend and I we went to the concert that they were here last time. And it was the best experience in our lives and it like cemented our friendship and everything. But my question is, are you gonna tour?

Darren: Um that’s a great question and hello and thanks for saying that, I love that show actually I remember what you’re talking about. Um yeah totally I mean that’s the whole point of, of me rehearsing with this band and everything. It’s a, it’s a huge part of what I do and um this year sometime ill have to do a smaller theatre tour. And make it just about the music, and then maybe next year depending on what happens to the record I’d love to do some kind of arena show. But ah you can definitely expect to see me touring in this country sometime this year.

AJ: I’m sure when we start asking our callers who they wanna see at "Your Show 3" your name will be coming up quite a lot.

Bridette: Mm hmm.

AJ: You may be forced to come back to San Diego Darren!

Darren: Hey all you gotta do is ask… so uh if I could fit in I would love to.

AJ: Darren Hayes!

Darren: Thanks a lot.

AJ: I do… I uh I feel bad that I put this guy on hold… (Picks the line up) are you still there?

Caller: Yeah I’m still here.

AJ: All right go ahead and have your question for Darren… (The guy is calling about something else) oh ok we have an artist on the line hold on (puts him on hold).

Darren: Well you’ve won and we’re sending you and a friend to see Darren Hayes in concert!

(Everyone laughs)

AJ: All right I know you have some more interviews to do, Darren Hayes! The album is called Spin you can pick it up anywhere right about now! You’re a great sport and a fun interview! And…

Bridette: Thank you so much!

AJ: An amazing live performer!

Darren: Much love to you! Thank you. Take care all right.

AJ: There you go Darren Hayes! Channel 933.
