Darren Hayes GMTV Interview Transcript
ITV1 UK - Interviewer: Lorraine Kelly
10th December, 2002

Huge thanks to Judith for typing up this transcript and sharing it with us! And thanks to Mary for the picture from the show of Darren with his platinum award for Spin.

(Judith's description of the setting: "Daren has just been on GMTV and looks fab! He was wearing a black suit, black shirt & tie and purple tinted shades- So cool! His new hair style is amazing. It's as short as in the SR vid, but with a bit more umphh to it, really, really cool! I've done a transcript of the interview (6 sides of A4 paper!). He sang IMY. It was completely different! The musical arrangement was totally new. Although the lyrics were the same, the music was completely different. I liked it. More acoustic, more upbeat. Great. It was a really good interview. It ran better than it reads. Lorraine Kelly was quite funny in the way she said some things. It was light-hearted and genuine. Really great exposure for him. Fantastic.")

Lorraine: Former Savage Garden front man Darren Hayes & he is here. It's really good to see you.

Darren: It's great to see you too.

Lorraine: How are you?

Darren: I'm OK

Lorraine: Good

Darren: I'm a little tired

Lorraine: You must be because you're jetting all over the place.

Darren: It's been... We've finished a pretty long tour actually. I had a couple of weeks off and I got sick on my time off. I'm just here to have some fun. One more week of promo. It's not too bad.

Lorraine: That's good. Doesn't that always happen though. When you're really busy & you are working, especially with what you do, you're fine. Then you stop and think Hey, i'll stop and have a really good time and you rest and then you get the bugs. (Darren grins and nods)

Darren: This year has been the most gruelling but rewarding year of my life, but it's deffinately been the year of the flu bug for me.

Lorraine: For sure. It's all going incredibly well though. I mean, you're on your own now and very well established on your own.

Darren: Especially here in this country. (Darren looks straight into the camera). I love this country. Thank you for being so beautiful to me. Because my records are selling and the concert tickets sold. And I totally expected to have to begin my career again when I started off as a solo artist. Here it's been a very warm reception.

Lorraine: It must've been quite scary 'cos it was a natural progression, you've said it yourself.

Darren: Yeah

Lorraine: It was a natural thing to do

Darren: It was terrifying (Darren laughs)

Lorraine: But it was frightening

Darren: Completely

Lorraine: It's like 'I'm on my own now'

Darren: But y'know I'm feeling pretty confident now. I'm feeling like i'm in my own space

Lorraine: Good. Sure. I know you are based in SF and I just visited there in the summer and I thought I could live there. What a great place.

Darren: I have the best of both worlds, because when I'm there, I'm not really that famous, so I don't get hassled at all. And it's a lot like Australia. It has blue skies and oceans and gum trees.

Lorraine: Gum trees. That's good

Darren: So it's err...Kinda reminds me of home. It's very peaceful.

Lorraine: That's really good. Now you're going to perform for us in just a minute. Spin the album has sold incredibly well. In fact so well that look what I'vce got for you. It's a thing! It's a platinum disc for 600,000 sales in the UK

Darren: That's fantastic!

Lorraine: There you are. Oh sorry, I've got fingerprints on it. (wipes clean with sleeve)

Darren: That's Ok. That's my first one as me.

Lorraine: Is that your first one as you?

Darren: Yeah, that's my first one.

Lorraine: Awww, that's really good.

Darren: Thanks

Lorraine: Have you got a wee room where you keep all your trophies?

Darren: I've got this hallway. If you come to my house, no-one sees it, but if you stay over-night and you have to use the loo, you see the awards.

Lorraine: I think that's a good place to put your award is in the toilet. (both laugh). Tha's for sure. Very much so.

Darren: It's pretty cool

Lorraine: Where do you get, I mean where do you get all the sort of inspiration for your songs? Is it where you live, what happens to you? How do you do that?

Darren: It's usually what happens to me. I usually carry a diary of lyrics that er.. ther's always 100 words to every pop song that you never see and the challenge is to condense those stories into a pop song, but in general, if i have an experience, then i want to sing about it. That's the kind of songwriter i am

Lorraine: And that's the key to longevity is to actually do your own stuff

Darren: Well you get paid more if you write your own songs (both laugh), which I would encourage some of the new people to start writing there own music. But you know, for me it's just a necessary outlet. I can't imagine not doing it.

Lorraine: No, it's what you do. That's the thing. That's the difference isn't it?

Darren: Deffinately

Lorraine: Because people just do it for that thing of i want to be famous, but i'm not sure why. I just want to be famous, but hey, singing might be alright.

Darren: No, you get over that pretty quickly. I do it for the feeling i get when i'm on stage and the look in people's eyes. Especially today, when there's so much going on in the world. Music is such a powerful tool. It really gives me so much more than I get from it (?)

Lorraine: Sure and that's what touches people. That's why people rushed out and bought the album in such huge numbers

Darren: I think so. I have the best fans in the world. I'm a very lucky man.

Lorraine: And since the SG days they've stuck with you, but i think you've got other people as well.

Darren: Yeah. It's changing. I guess i've... You know you lose some fans and you gain some fans. People grow up and move onto other things and so there's new faces and there's old faces.

Lorraine: But after the next couple of weeks, Christmas off?

Darren: Off, off, off, off

Lorraine: Chill?

Darren: Off

Lorraine: Just chilling, eating, drinking?

Darren: Erm... yeah... I don't know. I just need some time off. I haven't done some yoga for a long time.

Lorraine: OK. Good for you. Listen, you're gonna perform for us. What's the song?

Darren: It's IMY. It's a version I've never done of telly before.

Lorraine: Right

Darren: I'm very excited about it.

Lorraine: Mmm..OK.. Well can we tell you to go over there with your incredibly good looking band

Darren: (laughs as he leaves set) They are pretty cute aren't they?

Lorraine: That would be really good

Darren: Thanks

Lorraine: He's just getting sorted out, putting his guitar on and getting all fixed up. But wait 'til you see the band. They're absolutely lovely. Darren, great to see you. Take it away as they say.
