Transcript of Darren's interview to "Juicer"

Thanks to our Russian street team leader, Tonia for translating and typing up this interview transcript for us. To explain how Tonia did the transcript, I'll include her comments too..."Hey Cindy! Couple of hours and I'm done! Ta-da! This is the transcript of Darren's interview to "Juicer" (they aired it in mid of November or something like that). I decided not to transcribe everything what VJs were telling, coz (1) it was too long, (2) too stupid (3) and was a complete rubbish. At the same time Darren himself was very serious and honest and I really LOVED this interview (I think I managed to get like 75% of actual Darren's words, as I was trying to get thought one more dubbed interview LOL]. You know, even my mum was listening to it with huge interest! I only wish VJs were as serious as he was, but the "Juicer" is very unserious show, where two female VJs (Darya and Aurora) are trying to make men feel uncomfortable and laught at them. Feminist's show ;) Moreover, Darya couldn't pronounce Darren's name correctly all the time, and tryed all of versions - American, Australian and Russian pronunsiation L! So here's an actual transcript:"

Darya: Hello everyone, here's special issue of Jucer!
Aurora: Today we, as you requested, are interviewing Darren Hayes, who recently was in Moscow. We sent our charming VJ Snezhanna to ask him our traditional questions.
Darya: Also, during this hour you will see alot of Darren's and Savage Garden's videos, and also will get a chance to learn about Darren's favourite girl and the girl that he dislikes (from show business of course).
Aurora: Let's start from the most fresh video, Strange Relationship!

[They play "Strange Relationship" and then go bla-bla-bla... And the question to Darren is about Russia. Darren appeares on the big TV screens on the studio walls. He was sitting in him limo, in sunglasses, long-sleeved jeans shirt and jeans. Looking extremely tired.]

Darren: Yes, I did... I was dreaming about coming to Russia for whole my life and never thought I would be here... When I was a boy and was living in trailer park... 'cause our family was really poor... I never thought I would sing for a living and travel all around the world... So to be here, in Russia, especially in so sad for the nation times... it was very powerful feeling, you know. I didn't want to cancel... um... [Leonie's phone rang on the background, and she started to talk, so Darren stumbled and lost concentration for a moment] um... one second... Um... Because I knew my Russian fans, my Savage Garden fans waited for me for years, so... I was happy to be here, it was so lovely. Especially... You know, I played in Saint Petersburg the other day (smiles) and it was very beautiful, beautiful people there. Here in Moscow we had to cancel our second show due to all those tragic events... Alot of people were depressed, but they came from all the edges of the city to be at this single show. They are very brave and I respect that.

VJ Snezhanna: What did you like most in Russia (or in Moscow - I haven't heard)
Darren: People (smiles)... Food is pretty good. I mean... The city. The city is very beautiful... architecture, historical legacy... You seem to have very strong spirit. You are really brave and I respect you for that.

[switching to the studio. Aurora and Darya again go bla-bla-bla, commenting what Darren have just said]

Question: What makes you to write songs, how the inspiration comes to you? Darren: You mean whether there were moments in my life that inspired me to write songs? Oh... Sure! There were so many! I mean... You know, on my recent record... There is a title track called Spin and when I wrote that song... The world was once again... The world was in terms of war, like today, but at that time I was in America and there was dramas about presidential elections, there were kids killing each other with guns at schools... Um... There were issues in Bosnia... All over the world... In the Middle East there was crisis... I wrote that song about how music and spirit can save... That maybe I can't change the whole world or stop the war, but even for a minute... To be in a good mood, and just think about how we treat each other... On the global level... Yes, there were moments when I was in love, depressed, hearbroken, and I wrote songs about those moments because... Because I think that you can't get up on a stage and sing a song... you can't do it for a living if you didn't believe in it. You must believe and experience it yourself. If not - it is false. You know, even if I'm constantly on the road, my job exausts me, it is still my job. But behind it there is something real.

[Switching to studio again: VJs again rambling about nothing, telling that since Darren loved Russia so much, he now has to write an album about it. Then Darya says that they are going to play one of the best videos of Savage Garden. They play "Break Me Shake Me"]

Aurora: And now we are going to ask your idol our traditional question: what type of girls does he likes?
Darren: [laughs] You know, I like people... The really good thing about my job is that there is public life and private life. So... When it comes to my heart and love and romance... I never talk about it, but... Um... I gotta tell you that I think... That love and relationship they can be romantic, family or friendships. The other people are those who drive me to make music and get up on the stage... It would be personalities, some spirit... It's not physical characteristics... It's just... Someone who can make me laugh... [Darren is very serious when he says this by the way]

Aurora and Darya: But still we want to know... Any physical things that attract him!?
Darren: Well I think I've just said... And you know, it's really not important... Honestly... The main this is that girl can't be shallow. But if you want me to pick out something specific... It would be eyes. And there's nothing to do with the colour, the main thing is soul.

[Switching to studio, telling about Darren's dream to meet Madonna and giving him this possibility to be in one show with Madonna. They then play "Music"]

Question: What girl should do to attract Darren Hayes?
Darren: [laughs, and Leonie laughs at the background too] You know... Can I just say I didn't get to this job to meet someone... To charm, to attract people. I'm 30 years old, I'm okay, I have private live, I'm okay... Um... I don't do this to be like a picture. I'm glad I'm getting old... You know, Enrique - he can be the sex-symbol, and I'm too old for that and too fat... but I...

VJ Snezhanna: You're not!
Darren: [very seriously] Well, thank you, but I wanna be remembered as singer and songwriter. That's what I want to do. I want to continue all that... I want to get old... Get fat tummy, why not to get fat? [laughs] I want people to enjoy my music, my personality and my voice.

[Again switching to the studio, where Aurora and Darya again telling rubbish about Darren pretending and not wanting to confess on that subject. Darya comments that she has heard that Darren in fact is very hard person, and if you will find him in wrong mood, then... Bla-bla-bla]

Question: How he manages to stay so romantic all the time?
Darren: I'm a dreamer. I believe in happy ends. I believe in seenig good stuff in everything. When you do what I do for living... I write songs to express my emotions. The most amazing feelings I experience when I get the contact to audience. But there are other sides in my job. It's about being public person, kind of public politician... Everyone wants something, expects something from me. But now I'm at that stage of my life when I decided I don't want to satisfy everyone. I'm like everyone else, and have good days and bad days... But what I can do is to give my music to everyone. That the goal of my life.

Question: What "Strange Relationship" is about?
Darren: This song is about many relationships I had in my life. They are always strange. All my relationships - with friends, with lovers, even with my mother and father - are always dramatic and full of passion. "I love you!" - "I hate you!".... Um, you know....

VJ Snezhanna: That means that you are going through extremes in your relationships?
Darren: I think... Yes, probably yes. I think this song is about what excites me, and maybe about relationships in general - there are always highs and lows...

Question: What type of girls do you dislike?
Darren: (laughs) You're really, really stick on this topic... Okay... What kind of girls I dislike... Um... This is... You know, I don't really dislike anyone... Um... I don't like people who are cold. I'm very warm person, and I think it feels from the first sight... You know, I thonk 'cause I'm from Australia, I'm very open person, and don't afraid to express myself... I'm very touchy and this is kind og people I like...

[Switching to the studio once again. Darya and Aurora are telling that it seems that this "mate" believes in love from first sight! Then the say that they are now ready to show us that cold girl whom Darren dislikes so much. They play "I'm not a girl not yet a woman" of Britney Spears. Back to studio, VJs are starting to tell that in every Darren's and Savage Garden's video one can find very attractive girls, and they were wondering about the girl from "Insatiable" video]

Question: Tell us about the girl from your "Insatiable" video.
Darren: Yeah, she is great! We wanted to take the girl who would look like an actress from old Fellini movies. The concept of that video is that I am a ghost on the set of that black-and-white Frederico Fellini movie... And she is an Italian star. Yes, she is very beautiful and really great person.

Question: Do you choose girls for you videos yourself?
Darren: Yeah...I'm not... I'm human, of course I find someone beautiful and attractive. But if you will ask me if that is important that the girl is slim and has big breast - I will say no. A girl can be beautiful but not go under cliche... You know... The girl in my latest video "I Miss You" is actually an actress, Australian actress, who was in "Star Wars. Episod II"... When I saw her, I thought that she is wonderful person, and now we're friends. I really had not to pretend on the set that I am in love with her. And she is really warm person and great actress.

[Back to the set. VJs are rambling about Darren not being shy to confess he falls in love with every girl in his videos. Then they show bits of "The Making of Insatiable" where Darren tells about the concept of the video, and then play "Insatiable" itself. The end.]
