Big thanks to Renee' for typing up this transcript for us
Steve: He’s standing by wonder why we care talking about poke a dots and yellow jackets and everything. In New York City Via Satellite for a live performance this morning. Darren Hayes joins us!
Vikki: Hey Darren!
Darren: Hey!
Vikki: Steve and Vikki. Remember Us? Fondly. You do have memories of us?
Darren: Of being fondled or of Fondling?
Vikki: Both
Darren: Ah! The memory is blurry, but I’m remembering.
Steve: We had you guys in our studio. We had the complete band with you and it was one of the most fun sessions we’ve had live from a performer.
Darren: Well thank you for saying that. I mean I tell you I do love performing live and I know with Savage Garden when we first began we did a lot of there radio trips were we did acoustic version of and stuff and it was a lot of fun.
Vikki: and you and Zena have something in common now.
Darren: Really?
Vikki: Lucy lawless, cause I thought she had dark hair for years and years and years. And I thought you did too. And the two of you are closet blonds!
Darren: She is a Blondie?
Vikki: yes!
Darren: I love that.
Vikki: she's from New Zealand. And she was born blond and for some reason they wanted her to go dark haired for Zena and whatever. And she's kind of stayed that way. But you! You like me have realized that blonds to have more fun. Don’t we.
Darren: you know what is? I got sick of going in to the drugstore and buying that $8 black hair dye.
*Steve Laughs
Darren: It was just giving me grief. And.um. I’ll be 30 this year. And it’s just indicative at this point that I am in in my life. In terms of the music on this new solo album. In terms of my personality. Everything. It’s been almost like a return. There’s more controversy then Madonna. Me and my hair, it’s just scandalous!
*Steve and Vikki laugh
*Darren laughs
Vikki: And the single is Insatiable. Do you have an insatiable appetite for something? And tell us what it might be?
Darren: Usually carbohydrates.
Vikki: Really? You’re a carbs guy?
Darren: Yeah, you know really, I'm love life. I love being loved. You know I'm big on affection. You know, I give it and I love it.
Vikki: Are you in love right now?
Darren: Um….
Vikki: Awe… your not?
Darren: I could be.
Vikki: Oh, you could be?
Darren: No, you know I think I am actually.
Vikki: Oh, you’re just not telling.
Darren: Yeah.
Vikki: That is okay, that’s okay. And we found out that ET is your favorite movie. And you know the re-release is happening this weekend. And I thought maybe you were going to be first in line to go see it.
Darren: Well you know I really am going to go and see it. I'm a big fan. It's my favorite movie of all time. And I wrote a song about it on this album actually. Well I wrote a song about the year 1983, because, you when I was obsessed with ET and Michael Jackson and Cindy Lauper, all that kind of stuff. And yep, it was definitely a fun fun time.
Vikki: So which song on the CD is for ET?
Darren: Well it's about that period in my life. It's called Crush. You know and I talk about everything. I talk about…you know some of the lyrics are, I've give you some of them. I say "Cindy Lauper, Jackson, Simon Labon, I put Eurhythmics on, poppin and rocken in the USA. Day-Glo sweater tied around my neck. Studded demin. big hair, acid wash, rubix cube, and my boom box"
*Steve laughs
Steve: WOW!
Vikki: He’s singing bout you!
Steve: Is he still wearing those stone wash jeans?
Vikki: He is!
Steve: How did you know Darren?!
Darren: With the belt, he's got the little belt with the shirt tucked in.
Steve and Vikki: ah huh
Vikki: He's there!
*All laugh
Vikki: Well we understand your going to sing for us.
Darren: Well I’m in a recording studio right now; I've been rehearsing my band. I’m just about to take them all around the world and do some showcases and performances and… yeah we are going to play you a live version of my single Insatiable.
Steve: well we're ready man! Let’s hear it.
Darren: All right, let's do it.
*Plays insatiable
Steve: Darren Hayes on Star94! Insatiable on the Steve and Vikki show! Sounds good Darren!
Vikki: That’s one hot song. I’m sweating her, baby. Sweating is right!
*Darren laughs
Vikki: Steve and I were talking and if you wouldn’t mind talking about Savage Garden and the split, what ever happened to Daniel?
Darren: You know he's very talented and we wrote everything together.
Vikki: Oh you did.
Darren: Yeah 50 50 and he's and he's an amazing producer. He has record label at the moment, I mean… it's a bummer but reality is he just didn't really want to be a pop star. But he’s very talented. And I just um. You know it’s funny. It makes a really sexy story to say "Aw! You know there at war and whatever" but the reality is. You know the Eurhythmics is probably a better example. Of um…
Vikki: What about the Police?
Darren: Yep, that it.
*Laughs
Vikki: There was that one guy doing on the singing and the other two were good musicians, but you want to make as much money as you can so you go solo, right?
Darren: Well it's not even bout money. I've made enough money. It's about my soul and about singing. And the reality is that he didn't...You know he just didn't want to continue doing it. He wanted to be in the studio and I am a performer in my blood. And I fell like your just getting the best of me right now.
Steve: Yeah, you gotta love being on the stage to be able pull of going on tour and everything. I remember Daniel was very quite when he was here. But who made the call? Did you call him and say, "Look we gotta break up." Or did he do it?
Darren: It was actually his decision.
Steve: Okay. So you would have continued as Savage Garden?
Darren: Totally! I mean back then I knew I was going to do a Solo record one day. But it was something he can and talked to us about. Actually.. . Really at the launch of our second album he said, “You know I don’t think. I’m not really feeling this. And this is something I’m…I think I’m done.” And..and you know we decided would tour that record and we would just let it sit and we’d see how we felt towards the end. And it think that as the tour continued he actually lighted up a lot and had a lot of fun because I think he knew that at the end of it he had a whole new…
Steve: The pressure was off. Sure. So are you guys close enough that when you finished this. Like when you finished the track for Insatiable did you call him up and say, "Hey give this a listen Daniel, and tell me what you think?"
Darren: You know, I didn't. So it's a weird thing because he wasn’t involved, because I did this on my own. I didn’t really want him to hear it was mixed, mastered, on the radio. So to this day, you know cause were not. We've never been like super super close buddies it was more like we had this professional relationship we… every time we connected in the studio and on stage that was real. But off stage we had very separate lives and…I don’t know if he’s even heard the album yet. But I'm sure..I'm sure he would have an opinion.
Vikki: He has and he said to tell you *spith*
*Darren laughs heartily
Steve: You know I think Vikki made that up
*The all laugh
Steve: What do you think is the greatest written rock song out there ever in history?
Darren: "With or Without You" By U2
Steve: Do you really?
Darren: Yeah it's the best song ever written.
Steve: Best song ever written. What do you say that?
Vikki: Why?
Darren: Just gets me every time. As soon as I hear those first few notes (dings the first few notes) I'm done!
Vikki: See. Steve told me you liked "Feelings".
Darren: (disgusted) Steve was wrong. It' like (sings) "Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy!" No, I don’t think so.
All laugh.
Steve: So have you ever seen U2 live?
Darren: Many Many times.
Steve: So that's a concert that you go. Do you think Bono is one of the great concert performers to you?
Darren: He is it! I mean he’s got a heart of gold, and the strength of about a million men. He’s wonderful.
Steve: Hey Darren very cool talking to you thank you for performing the song this morning. Sounded great.
Darren: Thanks for having me. And hopefully we will catch up live face to face.
Vikki: We can’t wait! Bye!
Darren: Take care. Bye.
Steve: See ya man, have a nice weekend.
