Transcript of Australian TV interview Darren did with "Sunrise" on Prime Friday morning, April 5, 2002 (Thanks to Lena for sending it to me to share)
Sunrise: Hi Darren. Welcome to Sunrise
Darren Hayes: Thanks for having me
Sunrise: Cool. Now we've got some news just here it looks like you're gonna go #1 with Spin, your album, in the UK next Monday. How does that make you feel?
Darren Hayes: Amazed. You know I...I was basically woken up last night about one in the morning with the possibility. I mean the midweek results, uhm, indicated that the album, you know, it's the #1 album in the country, but we'll see. I'm not gonna count my chickens but, you know, honestly I'm overwhelmed. I didn't expect it to be received that well.
Sunrise: It's putting you up there with Kylie.
Darren Hayes: (looking shocked) Yeah! It's not a bad thing is it? (laughing)
Sunrise: Yeah exactly! Now this is a what if style question.
Darren Hayes: Uhum.
Sunrise: Do you think that if you hadn't hooked up with Daniel in the first place, Savage Garden got going, that you would be sitting here right now talking about you and your solo career?
Darren Hayes: Probably not! I mean who knows. I mean I...I'm very, uhm, publicly, you know I've always credited Daniel with, uhm...you know, finding me really! I mean, he was in a band that...uh you know, needed a singer and I turned up and he and I met and what I loved about that moment was that he saw something in me. He saw some potential in me and really encouraged me and developed me for years before...before the world ever saw us as a duo.
*Goes into showing a clip of the international Affirmation video.*
Sunrise: So it must be a real leap of faith for you to have left the band that sold 20 million albums...
Darren Hayes: Uhu
Sunrise: and now go out there as a solo performer?
Darren Hayes: He actually said to me, you know, you're brave. I've gotta tell you because, you know, I couldn't... I don't know, you know, if I could be in your shoes at the moment because it is like starting again. And you know I think that's a good thing. You know I think that...I think that we had an amazing run. Sold all those records and I think in some ways got a little bit cushy there at the top and I think that doing a solo record has definitely grounded me. It's made me work really hard and it's made me appreciate any of these successes that I'm getting much more.
Sunrise: Okay cool. Now you shot your first video for Insatiable in Australia...
Darren Hayes: Uhu
Sunrise: but you had to go to America and reshoot the video.
Darren Hayes: Right
Sunrise: Can you tell us what happened there?
Darren Hayes: It just sucked! (giggle) It...it's true. It cost a lot of money. Not as much as the papers reported but, uh, and it was beautiful but to me it kinda looked like a commercial.
Sunrise: So what was it that you actually liked about the new version of Insatiable?
Darren Hayes: Is that it was simple and the new version, what I loved about it is that it was romantic and, you know, I didn't wanna make this video like you would expect to. I mean, if you hear the song you think just put Darren in a bed with some white sheets and roll around with a supermodel, you know and...uh...I did... you know, everybody does that and I think there are just too many popstars that, you know, think that they are all that and I didn't wanna make that kind of video. I wanted to make a love story and that is what we did. It was...It was based on an old Italian film called La Dolce Vita.

Sunrise: Well you look like somebody else as well like you've changed your hair colour, which is a big move, I guess, for someone who's identity was sort of tied with Savage Garden's frontman?
Darren Hayes: Right! I mean I'm still so amazed with the attention it gets. I mean I don't get it! I don't get it! I don't understand it. Uh, I'm just like anyone else, I get bored. You know, the reality is...I mean did anyone ever think that that black hair was real?
Sunrise: So are you going to shoot your new video here for the second single, for Strange Relationship?
Darren Hayes: I've done it!
Sunrise: Oh really!
Darren Hayes: I just wrapped yesterday...uh, we shot the video for Strange Relationship and my hair is STILL BLOND and no danger of reshooting it. It's a really really cool video. Uh, it's very simple.
Sunrise: So when will we see you back here for a tour?
Darren Hayes: It will be this year but it will be smaller. I mean I wanna play smaller venues and I want to...I know, I wanna reconnect with an audience again. I don't wanna assume this is gonna be this huge show because I was in this band that sold millions of records. This is me beginning again and...and I want the focus to be more on music. You know then..then..the hoopla but.. but we'll see.
Sunrise: Rock and roll. Thanks for joining us Darren.
Darren Hayes: Cheers! Thanks alot.
